New Zealand
An isolated island nation in its evolutionary infancy, New Zealand is the most recently inhabited country in the world: its indigenous people arrived on its shores less than 1,000 years ago and its European inhabitants only 150 years ago. It is officially a bicultural nation that promotes both Maori and European components of its cultural identity, although it has an increasingly multicultural population. New Zealand is tackling unique challenges in managing its urban growth and its tourism and agricultural industries in the face of seismic activity, the same forces that created the mountains, rugged landscapes, and geothermal activity for which it is most famous in the global eye.
