Grounded in outcomes research

Founded by faculty for faculty, AUIP champions courses grounded in Experiential Learning Theory. The student outcomes of AUIP programs have been documented by its staff over the decades. Learn more about Experiential Learning Theory and Transformational Learning Theory from a 2017 article by Dr. Heather Gibson, a veteran faculty leader, and former AUIP staff member, Hannah Strange, published in the Frontiers Journal.

Stand out with study abroad

If you’ve completed an AUIP study abroad program, put it on your résumé! The skills and knowledge gained through your major requirements are applicable to a particular discipline, but the experience of studying abroad shows acquisition of a different kind of skill. You now have cross-cultural experience, have encountered notions of global citizenship, and have learned to work as part of a team of people who were strangers to you at the beginning of your program. Get in touch with your home institution’s career center and set up an appointment for personalized and professional tips on how to highlight these outcomes. To get the ideas flowing and to draft your thoughts, here are a couple of articles on highlighting your study abroad experience for potential employers:

Talk to past participants

To learn more about the impact of AUIP study abroad programs, we invite you to talk with one of our recent participants. We have a team of student marketing interns at universities across the US that do on-campus outreach and also contribute to AUIP social media content. Marketing interns write blogs on our AUIP Blog with their study abroad memories, outcomes and recommendations. To be connected to the relevant marketing intern, or if you don’t see a marketing intern at your home institution, email us at marketing@auip.com. Please note that while we encourage prospective program participants to speak with our marketing interns, we recommend confirming program costs and logistics with the faculty leader or study abroad office contact.

I gained much-needed experience in areas such as communication, public speaking, and social media marketing. Thanks to the AUIP marketing internship, I felt more confident and prepared as I entered the workplace.

Career impact

Thousands of students have completed AUIP programs since 1971, and the experiences have often made meaningful contributions to their academic and professional development. Read Kimberly Kenny’s story on her return to Antarctica on the AUIP Blog.

The AUIP Antarctica program kickstarted me on a journey of self-discovery and growth that brought me back to work professionally in Antarctica years later. It was a life-changing experience that I recommend to any student.

Kimberly Kenny, Oregon State University, Antarctica program alumnus
