Chris Tom, Buckeyes Abroad marketing intern, shares some tips on how to stay dry whilst in the field:

Unavoidably we were rained on while in the rain forest in North Queensland. To prevent you and your pack from getting soaked, I recommend packing a few little items to keep yourself dry and comfortable.

First, it may seem obvious, but I would definitely pack a raincoat. They are light, compressible and can be used as a shell.

Investing in a water proof writing pad such as a “Rite in the Rain” all weather journal will make your field notes legible without all those pesky ink runs, smears and soggy paper. The paper is chemically treated so water droplets will bead up and run off the paper. A water proof solution for great notes will cost $15-$20.

Also picking up a pack cover may be a worthwhile investment. Think of it as a shower cap for you backpack. There is an elastic band that runs around a thin plastic sheet. A cord connects the top of the pack cover to the bottom to prevent it from sliding off. For around $20-$35 the contents of your backpack are guaranteed to keep dry.
