Marisa Gottlieb, from the University of Florida, explains why everyone should study abroad as part of their college experience. She writes:

Why Study Abroad?

College students all around the United States are given opportunities to study abroad. Programs are offered on almost every continent for almost all majors for various amounts of time. So why should you take advantage of these opportunities?

The beautiful Port Douglas, North Queensland

Studying abroad allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture of the country that you are in. It will allow you to discover new foods, customs, religions, languages and traditions. Once returning back home, you can incorporate everything that you have learned into your current lifestyle. Traveling around the world will allow you to see new sites and experience new memories, which you will hold onto for a lifetime. Without traveling, you will not be able to perceive all of the beautiful sights around the world, including the beautiful North Queensland, Australia.

Being independent in an unfamiliar territory will give you the opportunity to meet other people in similar situations. Students come back from study abroad trips with new friendships, whether ones that attend the same university, live in the same country or live far away. Along with the independence comes learning about yourself, including your likes, dislikes and passions.

New friends at the Sydney Opera House

As we all know, applying to jobs is a very competitive and scary experience. Studying abroad sets you apart from other students that you are competing against. It shows employers that you have a sense of diversity and have a commitment to your educational study. Set yourself apart from other students by studying abroad and exploring the world!

Studying abroad has been the highlight of my college experience. Florida Down Under’s study abroad program to North Queensland, Australia, provided me with the opportunity to meet other peers who attend the same university, learn about new cultures, gain independence and see the world from a new perspective. If you haven’t studied abroad, now is your opportunity! Do not let the cost hold you back, there are hundreds of scholarships available online, as well as through your school, financial aid, if you’re eligible, and funding opportunities.
