Announcing the
2017 AUIP Photo Contest
“A Single Step”
AUIP’s programs encourage participants, academic faculty, local suppliers, and its employees to engage in cross-cultural dialogue and interaction that will result in an increased respect and appreciation for other cultures and environments, as well as helping to understand home cultures.
This year’s theme is “A Single Step” which refers to a study abroad experience being only the beginning a journey toward a rewarding yet conscientious life path.
The full quote goes: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ~ Lao Tzu.
Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher, is the supposed author of the Tao Te Ching (Book of the Way), from which this quote is taken. It is a sacred Chinese text which encourages its student to return to a ‘natural’ state which is in harmony with Tao. The word Tao translates to ‘way’, ‘path’, ‘route’, or ‘key’, and it can be thought of as the essence or pattern behind the natural world that keeps the Universe balanced and ordered.
A study abroad experience could be thought of as a collection of small steps, or one giant one, but either way it is now part of the participant’s greater journey. It is with this step that they embark on a life-changing experience and here at AUIP, we hope they take home what is learned to make a difference for the environment and in the lives of others. Often, it takes just one small change to make a big difference.
