With a population approaching 2 million, Brisbane ranks as the third largest city in Australia behind Sydney and Melbourne. However in the 2006 census, Brisbane recorded the largest growth rate of all capital cities with an annual growth rate of 2.2 percent. Plus Southeast Queensland, in which Brisbane is located, is the fastest growing region in the country.
As Brisbane grows in size, the city’s offerings continually expand. For our students from Wake Forest and the University of Montana beginning their Southeast Queensland program in Brisbane, here are some worthwhile extracurricular options, pictured left in map, in BrisVegas:
Brunswick Street Markets: Spend part of the weekend roaming this souvenir and craft market in the Valley. Grab brunch or an espresso at one of the many restaurants for a break from shopping.
City Botanic Gardens: Chill out on a bench seat within the garden’s 66 acres of rainforest, fragrant flowers and bamboo areas or along the waterfront overlooking the Brisbane River. For something active, walk or bike the garden paths. Bike rental available at the Albert Street gate.
Mt Coot-tha Reserve: Take a bus up to Mt Coot-tha for stunning panoramic views of Brisbane and Moreton Bay. If you have time, walk the bush trails or go to the planetarium.
South Bank Parklands: Cafes, shops and galleries line the manmade beach and an artificial swimming lagoon. If you can, snag a free-of-charge barbeque area to grill up some grub with your friends.
