Acacia shares their greatest academic achievements and personal developments while studying in Australia in the summer of 2024. They write:

Having been raised by a single parent, I never thought I would be able to have an opportunity to study abroad. Through hard work and determination, I was able to secure scholarships to support my academic travel. Through the experience, I have become a highly motivated individual with strong people skills and adaptability to new environments. I also define myself as a fast-learner with excellent organizational abilities and confident leadership qualities. I am goal-oriented, passionate about exploring new cultures, and dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment and the world as whole. Studying in Australia aligned perfectly with my academic pursuits in environmental sustainability and international affairs.

Immersing myself in Australia’s unique ecosystems, rich in biodiversity, was the ideal opportunity to engage in conservation efforts and broaden my environmental awareness. It has deepened my understanding of environmental sustainability and by experiencing firsthand the varied landscapes not present in the US, I have gained a more comprehensive perspective on global environmental challenges. Australia was the ideal classroom to apply learnings from my studies at The Ohio State University to real-world scenarios, enriching my academic experience and enhancing my understanding of conservation efforts.

During my time in Australia, I was also exposed to new cultures and I met a whole lot of new people. I gained valuable skills in working and communicating with many types of people and I developed a more nuanced understanding of diversity in communities. I believe that firsthand experiences like this enriched my learning beyond the traditional classroom settings and provided an opportunity to expand my global perspective, change my cultural biases, and foster a greater acceptance of diversity.

Ultimately, studying abroad not only fueled my academic curiosity but also nurtured my personal growth as an individual. It led me on a journey of self-discovery, fostered independence, open-mindedness, and a greater acceptance of global diversity, shaping me into a more well-rounded and culturally aware individual.
