Thanks to an innovative request from one of AUIP’s suppliers, Ziptrek Ecotours in Queenstown, New Zealand, a Philippines farmer got the opportunity to grow his business.
In January, a group of 32 students enrolled in the AUIP Sustainable Business program learned how Ziptrek, a worldwide leader in zipline adventures, incorporates sustainability into their business practices. Instead of receiving payment for their efforts, Ziptrek asked AUIP to make a donation to Kiva, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.
Happy to oblige, AUIP chose to help a farmer in a country that, like New Zealand, has also recently been affected by earthquakes – the Philippines. AUIP contributed towards a loan of $475 to help a farmer and family-man named Romeo buy fertilizer and other farm supplies needed for his rice field. Romeo hopes that the profit he makes from the loan will help him with his children’s schooling and other family needs.
As Romeo pays back his loan, the credit will be put back into AUIP’s account so it can be lent out to another worthy borrower. More information about making a donation to Kiva can be found here.
