With sustainability a central theme in many of our programs, we are always on the lookout for new innovative ways to conserve energy and live a more sustainable life. We think the zero-volt challenge is a fantastic idea to not only help the environment but also your bank balance!
Many modern appliances are still using power even if the actual appliance is turned off, which results in unnecessary power consumption and higher bills. The zero-volt challenge has three steps:
1) Download a zero-volt worksheet from this site.
2) Walk through your home and unplug every appliance until your electricity meter has stopped running and note what you unplug on the worksheet.
3) Reconnect those items that need to be connected to a power source 24/7 and consider which other items you have remaining. Could you leave them unplugged or purchase a bye bye standby? Or a smart strip, pictured left?
Then, enjoy lower power bills in the knowledge you’re doing your bit to conserve energy.
Let us know if you try the challenge and give us the results!
