Chris Tom, Buckeyes Abroad marketing intern, shares some interesting facts about house plants:

House plants can be much more than glorified book ends or decorative objects. Although they can be quite attractive, house plants can serve a much more important role with your health. These green machines have been shown to clean the air and improve inhabitant’s health.

Studies have shown that house plants remove contaminants from the air. Air that has been recirculated may contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) that cause headaches and nausea. If cigarette smoke is common in your house, think of purchasing your own natural plant air filter. Not only are these plants filters, but they produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. These plants can also improve your health as plants are natural humidifiers. The water that is taken up by the roots is released through their leaves. This increase in humidity can help to reduce the chance of catching a cold, especially in winter when the air is dry. Plants can also improve mood which leads to a happier and more productive indoor environment.

Different indoor plants have their own unique requirements. Factors that need to be considered when picking out a plant are the temperature, relative humidity, available light and amount of water. Enjoy your natural air filter!
