After spending the morning in lectures about Australian history and Sydney’s tourism and urban planning, our students explored Sydney by foot and boat today.
Tour guide Binowee shared knowledge on the Cadigal people who originally lived on the land that Sydney now occupies. She emphasized to students the connection the Cadigal people have with Mother Earth and the methods used to sustain resources, such as varying fishing of species and only taking the necessary food.
Students had the opportunity to receive ochre painting on their faces, as students Liz Lozano, John Byrnes and Stephanie Marshall proudly display in the picture left.
The day culminated with a boat cruise in Sydney Harbor on the Tribal Warrior with Aboriginal guides to see the area and its resources from a different perspective. The boat stopped at Clark Island out in the Harbor for students to walk the island and learn about the native species still found there that would have been used by the Cadigal people.
As the sun set behind the Sydney Harbor Bridge, students posed for a group shots on Clark Island meanwhile all raving about the spectacular views.
