“If anyone does get bitten, we will have access to an anti-venom,” these were the words from our guide during our pre-departure Skype with AUIP staff.
I briefly wondered what I’d got myself into, but quickly returned to being excited at the idea of experiencing all the fun new things to come. I am now on my way to Adelaide with the University of Illinois to study global health, and am looking forward to so many things including the opportunity to learn from the foreign systems and people.
I was drawn to this program for several reasons. I study biological anthropology, and hope to obtain a master’s degree in public health. An opportunity like this, that combines an examination of global healthcare with the opportunity to explore Australian culture firsthand is important to me. Additionally, as part of our curriculum, we will meet members of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. As a pilot with an interest in medicine and care accessibility, I have never come across an opportunity that so perfectly melds my interests into one experience.
What excites me most about this study abroad is knowing how much I will learn during my stay. I am excited to arrive with an open mind, ready to take on new knowledge and experiences. And as for the snakes, wish me luck!
