G’day to our Sydney program students from the University of Florida. Today the 8-day Sydney program began under the leadership of Dr. Steve Holland.

These students will spend the coming week discussing urban sustainability. And what better a location than Australia’s largest city? Just how big is Sydney though?

With approximately 4.4 million residents, Sydney overtook Melbourne in population in the 20th century. The Sydney Metropolitan area also holds the largest Aboriginal population of all Australian cities with approximately 30,800 Aboriginal people.

Geographic size wise, Sydney is larger than New York City. Sydney is 1,580 square kilometers across, the same as London, and more than double New York’s 780 square kilometers.

During the coming week we’ll keep you updated with Field Notes from Sydney.
