As I boarded the huge double-decker plane back to the States, I reflected on my month-long stay in Australia on the North Queensland program. The informative speakers, exceptional landscapes, and indigenous people and animals showed me much more than I expected. As part of the Buckeyes Abroad team, I am thrilled to share my experience with potential students looking for a study abroad.
I was born in Hawai’i and grew up near the ocean. So I was really looking forward to snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef (which is so big it can be seen from space). I was not disappointed. Larger grouper would be hiding amongst the coral and humphead wrasse four-feet long were lazily swimming beneath the boat. Rays could be seen burrowing into the sand alongside giant clams and brilliantly colored fish. Turtles were gliding effortlessly through the water, feet from my face. This snorkeling was some of the most pristine I have ever done.
Jimmy, our field guide on the Great Barrier Reef, was super informative and interesting. He gave us pointers as well as unique facts that helped us identify the many different kinds of fish. I remember him holding our cameras over the boat so we could get great footage of dolphins and whales to bring back home and show our friends.
This study abroad is one of the highlights in my college career. I urge all students to participate in one of the many offered at Ohio State. I look forward to sharing my trip with you all!
