South Island, New Zealand

July 6 – 29, 2022

Credits – 3 credits

This 3.5-week experiential program will examine resource conservation and the natural, and related social, history of New Zealand’s South Island. New Zealand’s isolation, after its separation from the ancient Gondwanaland millions of years ago, has left this island nation with a unique natural heritage. The plants and animals that have evolved here are unknown elsewhere in the world. In this course you’ll use New Zealand as a case study to examine different cultural perspectives on the three pillars of sustainability: environment, social equity, and economics.

A love for hiking, the outdoors, and adventure was what originally drew me to this program…. But the program ended up being so much more than that. As an Accounting major going into a program based around sustainability I was excited to see the applications I could bring home from the trip into my professional life. The issue of creating more sustainable business practices is becoming increasingly more relevant…. The combination of cultural immersion, adventure, and sustainability made this an overall unforgettable experience.”

Celebrating the holidays in Antarctica was an amazing experience; not only did we have snow 24/7, but we got to celebrate with seals, whales, and penguins! We were surrounded by beautiful and dramatic landscapes during our Christmas Eve dinner, and kayaking during the holidays was a priceless gift.”
