New Zealand & Australia

Sustainablity & Conservation Service Learning

New Zealand & Australia: Sustainablity & Conservation Service Learning

Program Description

This three and a half-week program combines our North Island New Zealand Service Learning program with an additional two weeks conducting service learning projects in North Queensland.

The New Zealand portion of this program examines ecological restoration and resource conservation in the North Island through an active engagement in service learning projects. New Zealand is at the forefront of restoring degraded habitat by reintroducing native animals and original native flora after removing animal pests. Students will learn about restoration approaches and how they can lead to improvements in biodiversity conservation and carbon offsetting through classroom lectures and field trips. They will then use their knowledge to assist community groups with long-term restoration projects. The course will include an examination of Māori conservation values and culture and how these social aspects influence restoration outputs.

The second half of the program explores similar issues in an Australian context. Projects include wetland restoration and planting with an Aboriginal community, rainforest regeneration and research on cassowary conservation, data collection on the Great Barrier Reef, and an ongoing planting project in the Daintree World Heritage Area.

Program Highlights

  • Your time learning and serving in New Zealand and Australia will make a positive and important contribution to biodiversity conservation. Don’t just gain from your study abroad experience, give something back too!
