I am the classic over-packer. I bring enough clothes to ensure I am prepared for EVERY single situation. Gloves? Sure, it might get cold. One sweatshirt? Better bring two in case someone forgets one. Those are thoughts I have every time I pack, so I’ve managed to come up with a list of tips that help me, the worst over-packer you’ll ever meet, to successfully not overfill my suitcase.

Check the weather of the place you’re going

While the weather is subject to change, it is worth checking it the weeks leading up to your trip to see what the average temps are like. It will save you from bringing unnecessary items.

Bring layers

If you’re going somewhere warmer, bring tank tops, t-shirts, light long sleeves, and a light jacket. Try long sleeve base layers, scarves, and a vest topped with a durable jacket for colder destinations.

Roll your clothing

Roll your clothing and place it in a way you’ll remember it (t-shirts on one side, pants on the other, etc). Rolling helps reduce wrinkles too, and when you’re abroad ironing is not on the to-do list.

Put your liquids in plastic bags, then put those in bigger plastic bags

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, perfume, toothpaste, mouthwash, lotion, sunscreen, etc. When any one or all of these inevitably explode, you’ll be happy it’s all over your double layered bags than your perfectly rolled clothing.

Be skimpy on shoes

Avoid shoes you will only wear once. Multiuse is the key.

Shoes that are durable enough to walk around town all day, but can be dressy if worn with a nicer outfit are ideal.

Save

Save

Kate Mayfield, the University of Montana’s Sustainability in New Zealand and Australia student blogger, writes: No one dreads packing more than me.
