The focus, initially, will be studying the impact of surf tourism, with a particular focus on coastal communities in the less-developed countries and the concept of sustainable tourism. Classes will be offered in this topic within the university\u2019s larger sustainable tourism program.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Center&#8217;s website, it will lead surf tourism to a more sustainable path by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Connecting with the surf industry and surf tourism industry to create a progressive research agenda;<\/li>\n<li>Distributing specialist knowledge to the wider surfing community, including: governments, the surf industry, tourism developers, destination communities, non-profits, and tourists;<\/li>\n<li>Shaping responsible global citizens through experiential learning opportunities; and,<\/li>\n<li>Inspiring active stakeholder engagement with the social and economic development of destination communities, sustainable use of their resources, and conservation of their critical environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For a news article about the Center, read the\u00a0<em>San Diego Union-Tribune\u00a0<\/em>article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.signonsandiego.com\/news\/2011\/sep\/16\/center-of-surf-universe-becomes-home-of-sdsu-surf\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, through\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aztecsabroad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aztecs Abroad<\/a>, Jess and his wife Sandra will be taking students to New Zealand this winter and Australia and Fiji next summer to further students&#8217; education on sustainability issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Jess Ponting, pictured left, one of AUIP\u2019s newest faculty to come on board with our programs, has been busy opening\u00a0The Center for Surf Research\u00a0at\u00a0San Diego State University.
