While the expedition didn’t require a new wardrobe, the best purchase I did make to prepare for my expedition was a pair of Bogs boots.

Bogs boots come in a variety of colors and styles. I purchased the Bogs Classic High Boot in black, pictured left. This style of Bogs boot has an insulation rating to -40°C and is 100% waterproof. What makes Bogs better than the average pair of rubber rain boots or snow boots is the comfort. Rain boots don’t keep you warm, and snow boots usually aren’t very comfortable for long periods of time. The insulation around the calf of the Bogs is flexible and the soles have amazing cushioning. Since these boots are so flexible and comfortable they don’t require the “breaking-in” period that most other durable boots require.

If you decide to purchase a pair of Bogs, you will undoubtedly wear them beyond Antarctica. These boots are also great for a North American winter, field work, or outdoor recreation. Bogs can be purchased from the website directly or other online retailers like Amazon.com. If you want to try them on in person before you purchase, many outdoor recreation stores like Bass Pro Shop carry this brand.

Shown right, is Amanda with her Bogs boots in Antarctica doing a some penguin watching!

Amanda Wilson, Hokies Abroad marketing intern, participated in the Antarctica Program last year and is heading back again this year as a teaching assistant.
