Student Perspective: Your Suitcase-Tips for Preparing to Study Abroad

May 5th, 2017

Amanda Sanchez, the NC State Wolfpack Abroad marketing intern, writes: Studying abroad is an exciting and amazing experience! But when traveling, being prepared can be the difference between a good day and a rough one. So, in preparation for your trip, here are some reasons to take preparing seriously; it might make all the difference on your journey!

Some people love to pack, others simply dread it. Knowing what to pack can streamline the process, so be sure to read the AUIP suggested packing lists, and of course, follow them! The items on the list are very important, so take them seriously and be sure to bring them. When traveling in the Southern Hemisphere winter, warm base layers made of polypropylene or other moisture-wicking material are especially crucial. If you need to, invest in key items to ensure you’ll be comfortable every day of your trip. A rain jacket, good hiking shoes (water-resistant/proof), and a comfortable, sturdy backpack are basic essentials.

Traveling frequently and moving often can be stressful, but you can limit your stress by packing lightly. For most people, this can be surprisingly difficult. We want to be prepared for whatever happens! However, during a study abroad experience it is well worth limiting how much you bring. Less is more, meaning that less time organizing and re-packing your suitcase is more time for you to have fun and experience the places you are visiting, often for a very short time. Items that serve multiple purposes, such as 3-in-1 jackets, are especially useful when moving between destinations.

Studying abroad is meant to be an extraordinary experience, so embrace the differences in culture, climate, or lifestyle on your journey. Whether that means leaving a favorite pair of stylish shoes at home or investing in a warm winter jacket, be sure you also leave room to pick up a local item of clothing along the way. It will likely be a souvenir that you will cherish for years to come!
