Sustainability & Conservation Service Learning

New Zealand: Sustainability & Conservation Service Learning

Program Description

This 12-day study abroad program will examine ecological restoration and resource conservation of New Zealand’s North Island through an active engagement in service learning projects. New Zealand is at the forefront of restoring degraded habitat by reintroducing native animals and original native flora after removing animal pests. Using classroom lectures and field trips, students will learn about restoration approaches and how they can lead to improvements in biodiversity conservation and carbon offsetting. They will then use their knowledge to assist community groups with long-term restoration projects. The course will include an examination of Māori conservation values and culture and how these social aspects influence restoration outputs.

This program can be combined with one of our three and a half-week Australia or New Zealand South Island programs.

Program Highlights

  • New Zealand is one of the nations most in need of hands-on ecological restoration. This program will teach you about environmental impacts and how to revitalize natural areas so that people and nature can better coexist.
  • Your time learning and serving in New Zealand will make a positive and important contribution to New Zealand’s biodiversity conservation. Don’t just gain from your study abroad experience, give something back too!
  • Stay overnight at a traditional Māori marae (meeting house) and learn about indigenous worldviews.
  • Gain a unique insight into New Zealand life and culture that most tourists don’t get by interacting with locals while doing something important.
