Fiji

Sustainability

Program Description

This experiential program uses the theme of sustainable development to explore the relationship between people and the natural environment. We examine the complex relationships between Fijian cultural practices, environmental conservation, and eco-tourism. Despite several centuries of outside contact and a unique ethnic mix, traditional Fijian values and customs still flourish and have a profound influence on the connection between people and the land.

Our experiential education focuses on learning through guided action. In addition to introductory lectures by local experts, this program includes several days exploring the pristine coral reefs of the Mamanuca offshore islands, a homestay in a traditional Fijian village, and kayaking through the highland rainforests.

This program can be combined with one of our Australia or New Zealand programs, as Fiji is an inexpensive stopover on the way to or from both countries.

Program Highlights

  • Explore the vibrant traditional culture of Fiji, including colorful markets, friendly villages, and ancient kava ceremony rituals.
  • Snorkel on pristine coral reefs as you research human impacts on remote coral atolls.
  • Stay for a night in a traditional Fijian village and form a lifelong friendship with your host family.
  • Kayak through the remote highlands of Viti Levu, through dense rainforest and spectacular gorges.
  • Learn about Fijian culture and history from the leading experts in Pacific studies.
