Sustainability in North Queensland

Australia: Sustainability in North Queensland

Program Description

This three and a half-week experiential program uses the theme of sustainable development to explore the relationship between people and their natural environment. North Queensland boasts some of the most diverse and remarkable natural resources in the southern hemisphere. Known as the Sunshine State, Queensland is home to lush rainforests, Outback scrub and desert, and the spectacular marine diversity of the Great Barrier Reef.

This program travels to the stunning national parks, forests, wildlife reserves, coastlines, and islands of North Queensland under the guidance of knowledgeable field professionals. The starting point for this journey is Magnetic Island, a beautiful island with stunning beaches and abundant wildlife including a large population of koalas. You will enjoy hiking and exploring the island, while learning from local experts at prestigious institutions such as James Cook University, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Over the following three weeks, you will then travel to a diverse selection of fascinating sites, including the Great Barrier Reef, ancient coastal rainforests, a rural farmstay, and an eco-retreat on the edge of the Outback.

Some sessions of this program also include time in Sydney at the end of the program.

Program Highlights

  • Snorkel over the Great Barrier Reef, one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth, to see a vast array of colorful fish, corals, and if you’re lucky possibly even turtles or marine mammals such as whales.
  • Hike through pristine rainforest, in search of the giant native cassowary, and help with a forest regeneration project that will contribute to saving this endangered species and others.
  • Cuddle a koala, or view them in their natural habitat from below.
  • Kayak and hike with Aboriginal elders, who will introduce you to their traditional dreamtime stories that explain their connection to the natural environment.
  • Stay on a real working Aussie farm and make lifelong friends with your homestay family while helping them with their daily farm tasks.
  • Wonder at the starriest sky you’ve ever seen from the edge of the remote Outback.
