Sustainability in South Queensland

Australia: Sustainability in South Queensland

Program Description

This three and a half-week experiential program uses the theme of sustainable development to explore the relationship between people and the natural environment. Queensland is known as the Sunshine State, and is home to Aboriginal communities, lush tropical rainforest, golden beaches, uniquely Australian marsupials, and the marine diversity of the magnificent Great Barrier Reef.

This program travels to the stunning national parks, forests, wildlife reserves, coastlines, and islands of South Queensland under the guidance of knowledgeable field professionals. It begins in the modern, sophisticated city of Brisbane, where you will learn about Australian history, culture and ecology from program faculty and local experts. During the following three weeks, you will then explore three diverse ecosystems: an isolated island on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, subtropical and temperate rainforest at Lamington National Park, and the Outback at Carnarvon Gorge. You will have the opportunity to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, learn about traditional Aboriginal culture and customs in the Outback, hike through lush rainforests while researching the resident wildlife, encounter koalas and kangaroos up-close, and stay with an Aussie family to experience real life down under.

Program Highlights

  • Stay on a remote coral atoll at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling is world-class here, and manta rays and turtles are often seen!
  • Learn how to throw a boomerang during a cultural workshop that explores traditional Aboriginal culture and worldviews.
  • See the Southern Cross and more stars than you have ever seen from your vantage point in the Outback.
  • Get up close and personal with Australian wildlife, such as koalas, kangaroos, and other marsupials native only to Australia.
  • Make lifelong friendships with your homestay family, while learning more about Aussie lifestyles.
  • Explore South Queensland’s network of national parks and protected areas, which includes rainforests, coastlines, marine reserves, and offshore islands.
