Journalism in South Queensland

Program Description

This four-week program operates as an intensive reporting and writing seminar with the goal of honing your storytelling skills to produce content across all media platforms for publication on the course website. The program traverses the southern part of state of Queensland, often nicknamed the Sunshine State, as it enjoys over 300 days of “fine” weather a year and a coastline almost continuously graced by white sandy beaches. Queensland offers more than just beach culture, however, hosting some of the oldest rainforests in the world, uniquely Australian marsupials, the marine diversity of the Great Barrier Reef, the Outback, and many traditional Aboriginal communities.

The program visits three distinct ecosystems: the Great Barrier Reef, Lamington National Park, and Carnarvon Gorge. By exploring these ecosystems, all less than a day’s drive from urbane Brisbane, you will hear from a diverse range of sources and thereby craft stories on a range of issues through multimedia reporting. Brisbane will serve as the hub for this program, where it will begin and end and where you will return to between each of the three field excursions, to write and edit in the program’s own multimedia newsroom.

Program Highlights

  • The rugged mountains, cascading waterfalls, lush rainforest, and tall forests of Lamington National Park provide some of the best hiking in Southeast Queensland. Hike to waterfalls, view the elusive platypus, and identify some of the over 150 bird species that inhabit the region.
  • Walk carefully amongst the Great Barrier Reef at low tide to see marine life such as sea cucumbers and bright blue sea stars. During snorkels you’ll encounter hundreds of colorful fish, sculptural masses of coral, and if you’re lucky perhaps even turtles or manta rays.
  • A walk through Carnarvon Gorge leads to ancient Aboriginal cave paintings and engravings, exemplifying the life patterns and spiritual beliefs of the Karingbal and Bidjara people.
  • A night walk in the Outback is the best time to see Australian mammals, over 80 percent of which are nocturnal. Evenings in the Outback are also ideal for Southern skies stargazing, far from the light pollution of Queensland’s coastal settlements.
  • Explore the many museums, cafes, galleries, and riverside features of the sophisticated, vibrant city of Brisbane.
